Front Door Price Ranges: What to Expect
The published range for a front door in the North American market is broad: roughly $300 at the low end and over $5,000 at the high end. That spread is not marketing noise. Each band corresponds to a different construction, a different hardware package and a different service life, and knowing which band you are in prevents both overspending and regret.
The bands, and what they buy
These are planning bands for budgeting, not quotations:
- Entry level, a few hundred dollars. A stock size, a hollow or honeycomb core, a veneer or moulded face, a single-point lock and a standard threshold. Adequate for a sheltered opening; expect the finish and the hardware to set the service life.
- Mid range, high hundreds to around two thousand. An engineered or solid core, better species or a factory finish, a prehung frame, and hardware that can be upgraded later. This is where most residential replacements land, and the best value per year of service.
- Upper range, two to five thousand. Custom size, sidelights or a transom, a premium species, a multipoint lock, a thermal-break threshold, and impact or security glazing where required.
- Above five thousand. Oversized leaves, bespoke joinery, imported species, integrated automation, or historic-profile replication. At this level the door is a fabrication project and should be priced from drawings.
Four things that separate the bands
Construction of the leaf, quality of the frame and its anchorage, the lock and hinge package, and the threshold and weather seal. The visible face is the cheapest of the four to change and the one most often used to justify a price. A door with a beautiful panel and a hollow frame is a low-band product in a high-band finish.
The costs that are not the door
Budget for removal and disposal, frame repair if the rough opening has moved, painting or staining if the finish is site-applied, hardware replacement, and the interior trim repair that almost every replacement requires. On a like-for-like swap these can add a meaningful fraction to the door price; on a size change they can exceed it.
How to compare two quotes
Ask both suppliers for the same five lines: leaf construction and core, frame material and jamb depth, lock and hinge specification with load and cycle ratings, threshold type and water management detail, and finish with the maintenance cycle. Two quotes that agree on those five are comparable. Two quotes that only agree on the price are not.
If you have an opening size and a budget band, send them and we will tell you which construction that budget actually reaches, rather than quoting a number for a specification that will not survive the exposure.
