How to Install an Aluminum Glass Garage Door
A sectional aluminum glass door is a balance problem. The panels, the track and the torsion spring have to agree, and if any one of them is off, the door binds, the operator strains and the panels eventually crack at the stile. Installation is straightforward if the sequence is respected.
Before anything goes up
Verify the opening dimensions against the drawing, check the head height and the side room, and confirm the floor is level across the opening. A floor that falls 10 mm across a 4 m opening will show as a wedge-shaped gap under the bottom panel, and no amount of adjustment to the track will close it. Confirm the headroom available for the tracks in the raised position, and the position of any structural member the tracks will be fixed to.
Track calculation and installation
Track layout is set by the door height and the required clearance. Vertical tracks must be plumb and parallel; a few millimeters of divergence over the height is enough to make the rollers bind on one side. Horizontal tracks must be level and at the same height on both sides, since a door that runs on uneven tracks will drift and wear the rollers unevenly. Fix the tracks to structure, not to cladding, and check the diagonal measurements before tightening everything.
Panel sequence
Start with the bottom panel, set it level and centred, then work upward. Each panel should engage the previous one fully across the hinge line before the hinges are fixed. Check that the horizontal alignment is consistent across the full width at each course. On a glass door this matters visually as much as mechanically: a 2 mm step between panels is invisible on a solid door and obvious on a glazed one.
Torsion spring
The spring is wound only after the door is fully assembled and the tracks are confirmed. Follow the manufacturer's turns specification for the door weight and height, wind both springs equally, and secure the winding bars and set screws properly. This is the step where people get hurt: a torsion spring stores enough energy to cause serious injury, and it should only be wound by someone who has done it before, with the right bars.
Adjustment and handover
- The door should balance at mid-travel and stay there when released by hand.
- The gap at the perimeter should be even, and the bottom seal should contact the floor along its full length.
- The operator, if fitted, should reverse on obstruction; test it with a deliberate obstruction before handover.
- Run the door through five complete cycles and check the rollers, hinges and cable for wear or slack.
We supply aluminum, galvanized steel and glass-section garage doors, and ship the track and spring specification with the door. If you are installing a large glazed door and want the track layout reviewed against your headroom before it arrives, send the opening dimensions and a photograph of the interior ceiling structure.
